In 2 Peters, 6 etc the fire of Hell is compared to the fire which burnt Sodom and Gomorrah, it destroyed the cities and was certainly not a metaphorical fire.
Sister Lucia saw a sea of fire with many people within. Sr. Lucia wrote that Our Lady said that many souls go to Hell ( ‘molte anime vanno all’ inferno ).
In Fides Catholica Quaderni 1 Fr.Stefano Manelli mentions the saints who have written about Hell. Some saw Hell and returned to tell us about it. H cited St. Bernard, St.Veronica Giuliani, St.Catherine of Siena, St.Teresa of Avila, St. Alphonsus Ligouri and St. Faustina Kowalski.
Jesus tells us that the way to Hell is wide and spacious and most people take it.(1)

On March 25, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI referred to Hell and broke the silence on this subject.
Fr. Manelli saw many people in mortal sin within the Catholic Church who are on the way to Hell.There is atheism, agnosticism, Satanism, absolute relativism for whom there is no absolute truth.

Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in a huge fire, without weight or equilibrium, and amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repulsive likeness to frightful and unknown animals, all black and transparent. This vision lasted but an instant.
